Delete a Message Stuck in the Outbox – Microsoft Outlook

Ever had that problem where you’re trying to send a message in Microsoft Outlook and it gets stuck in the outbox? You’ve tried deleting it but it gives you the message that the message is in the process of being sent so you can’t delete it? And any other emails you try and send get stuck in the queue behind the message that won’t move? The reason the email got stuck in the first place is usually because it’s too large for your server to process. If you google the solution to this you’ll find a long list of really complicated ways of trying to remove the message, often involving having to add new PST files and who wants to do that? I have two easier solutions for you.

Solution 1:

Go to file –> work offline to put outlook into offline mode.

Go get a cup of coffee/tea.

Come back, close outlook.

Re-open outlook and try and delete the file.

Solution 2:

Go to your outbox.

Right-click on the file and click “move file to another folder.” and move it somewhere else, say drafts.

Go to drafts, delete the file.

I get this happening way too often. And what peeves me even more is that in most cases the bl*%#& thing has been sent and popped into the receiver’s inbox while MSO says it hasn’t gone yet. Before I realised what was happening I used to stop it then resend it and it would keep happening so I’d do it all again. Meantime the person on the other end was getting a new copy each time … and I didn’t have a clue. Grrr!

So, my solution now is … I include myself in bcc for any large sends so I know it has actually been sent. Then I can plug in one of your solutions and forget it. That way I get a copy of the send before deleting it in case I need proof or whatever.

Thanks for the easier fixes! Oh, and the pineapple cheescake recipe – might just give it a go this long weekend :)

The exact same thing happens to me! And then I get the other person emailing back going “uh, reason you sent it to me 7 times is…?” That’s a great idea putting yourself in the BCC to prevent that, I will get myself into the habit of it! Glad to have been of help with the easier fixes. And the pineapple cheesecake is a dream to make, so simple. I love providing food suggestions with tech solutions :D
